Delia Lerma case update: Delia Lerma was killed in South Bend, Indiana, in 2007. Her case remained unsolved for nearly 19 years. Earlier this year, South Bend cold case investigators reopened the case using modern techniques and technology.
Due to the advancements, investigators essentially started over. They reviewed all of the original case files, looked at the physical evidence, and re-interviewed any witnesses.
After gathering what they had, investigators submitted the case to a grand jury. Then in March, the grand jury returned a murder indictment against Delia Lerma’s husband. Lucio Lerma Sr. He entered a plea of not guilty.
Lucio Lerma Sr.’s murder trial had been scheduled to begin on November 16. That trial will no longer take place.
Police responded to Lucio Lerma Sr.’s home in the 700 block of South Bendix Drive on August 22 after receiving a report of an unresponsive man. When officers arrived, they found him deceased.
However, police said the death did not appear to involve foul play or anything suspicious. However, authorities ordered an autopsy as a precaution. At the time of this Delia Lerma case update, the coroner had not released the results.

After Lucio Lerma Sr. died before trial, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office started dismissing the murder charge against him. They may consider the case officially closed within the next couple of weeks.
Since an indictment is not a conviction. Lucio Lerma Sr. pleaded not guilty, and even after his death, he is presumed innocent. Investigators may believe they know what happened, but no court will ever decide whether their conclusions were correct.
Delia Lerma’s family will not receive the closure they may have gotten through a trial and verdict. The reopened case led to an indictment after nearly 19 years, but Lucio Lerma Sr. died before a jury could hear the evidence.
This Delia Lerma case update leaves the case without a trial, a verdict, or a legal finding of guilt. That is what makes cases like this so difficult for the families left behind.
